Dupuis Important Jewels Auction in June drew international bidders for jewels by Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels. Additionally, important sapphires, emeralds, diamonds, and Art Deco jewels realized strong bids.
Most notable among the highlights of the auction was a beautiful Art Deco bracelet, signed Cartier, that sold for a hammer price of $75,000, fifteen times the low-end of the estimate. More than 90% of all Cartier jewels were sold in the auction.
Over 85% of Art Deco jewels sold, reaching collectors worldwide, and creating spirited bidding. Art Deco continues to spark the imagination of jewellery lovers, as it has since the 1920s.
Sapphires created widespread interest at the auction. A stunning pair of ear pendants set with two extraordinarily brilliant blue Sri Lankan 9 carat sapphires with an estimate of $40,000 sold for nearly double, at $75,000. One lovely ring containing an untreated 13.20 carat emerald-cut sapphire had a hammer price of $48,000, more than twice the estimate. Emerald-cut sapphires are rare, and usually create a lot of interest.
There was strong interest in unique, handcrafted jewels, from the globally familiar house of Van Cleef & Arpels, to Sterlé, to the notable Canadian atelier of Karl Stittgen, each house selling 100% of lots offered.
Diamonds continue to be a favourite at auction. A mainstay of the world of jewellery, diamonds of a wide range of shapes, clarities, colours, and carat weights sold well at the auction. One pair of one carat diamond stud earrings sold for more than double the low end of the estimate, with a hammer of $13,000. Two very large diamonds, each weighing nearly 20 carats, sold for a combined price of close to half a million dollars.
We are currently collecting for the next Important Jewels Auction, to be held in November.
